Movie Review: Avatar

The movie has a leftist message, but it is a STUNNING film.  Let me break this down for you.  CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!:

Speaking strictly on the plot itself:  Predictable.  Frankly, I was a bit under-impressed on this particular film's plot given the hype and time it took to bring to the screen.  Knowing however the leftist message contained in the film, it isn't real surprising:  Evil white-man army comes to pillage the native's planet of it's natural resources.  How good can that plot actually be?  A few weeks ago I read a commenter on another blog sum up the plot pretty well - this movie is "Dances With Wolves" in space with blue aliens.  Pretty much on the nose.

To get it out of the way, let me paraphrase the leftist talking points contained in the movie:  The VA can't and won't take care of it's veterans wounded in evil wars.  Soldiers are really just mercenaries in waiting, chomping at the bit to murder innocents.  Military commanders and corporations are evil (they advocate "pre-emptive war to fight terror with terror"), while scientists are portrayed as altruistic advocates for peace and diplomacy.  Toss in a fair amount of Gaia (Eywah) worship and sprinkle on every modern stereotype about how American Indians were treated in the 19th Century and BAM - leftist message in movie.  John Cameron isn't even subtle with the messaging.  Why should he be?  He a Leftist who's last picture made somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.3 BILLION dollars worldwide.

One thing which was funny about the heavy-handedness in the movie's leftist messaging was that it didn't really impact the audience.  In fact, the messaging was so heavy-handed that when the "pre-emptive war" line mentioned above was spoken, the audience I was part of laughed and heckled the line itself.  Even the audience I was attending the movie with wasn't 'touched' by Cameron's attempted proselytizing.

Of course I knew the movie was Lefty message heavy going in.  Being prepared for it made me enjoy what really makes this movie awesome - the technology used to film it.

The visuals of this movie are incredible!  The 3-D filming was spectacular.  The CGI-live action syncing was pretty flawless.  It was paced well; the movie honestly didn't seem like it was as long as it's 2 hour and 40 minute run-time..  The action was good with some decent humor thrown in as well.

It's almost hard to describe the 3-D effect in this movie.  There was one point in the movie where the main characters are running along high-altitude terrain where I felt, just for a moment, like I wold fall off the edge of the trees the characters were running along myself.  This movie isn't hindered by old-time, cheap 3-D gimmicks - the whole film is shot in 3-D.  It is seamless and there is depth to every scene.

Not to make this review to long, let me close it up.  Knowing this movie contained a rather heavy-handed attempt at Leftist proselytizing helped me enjoy all the other aspects of this film.  Just as "Dances With Wolves" is message-centric, it doesn't take away from how good a film it really is - unless you let it.  If you go see this, don't allow yourself to get bogged down in the minutiae of the messaging.  Enjoy this movie, as I did, as a visual and technological feast.

ADDENDUM:

I saw this movie on an IMAX screen in 3-D.  IMO, this is the only way to see this movie.  But if you aren't near an IMAX screen (or can't stomach the extra cost of seeing an IMAX movie - let's be honest, it cost me $60 dollars for five people to see this movie - and that was with the military discount - just for tickets!  IMAX ain't cheap!), at least be sure to see the film in 3-D.

That Damn Medieval Warm Period

or, "How Michael Mann's Hockey Stick Climate Graph Is A Complete Fraud".

Contrary to Warmist dogma, CO2 is not the driver of global temperature we are led to believe.  Also contrary to Wamist dogma, mankind and our technology is not the great poluter of Mother Gaia we are led to believe.  How do we kow this?  Becasue it was warmer 700-1000 years ago - the so-called Medieval Warm Period.

The famous 'Hockey-Stick' graph, produced by Warmist extrordinaire Michael Mann, is fraudulent because it refuses to acknowledge this wamer period.  It is also fraudulent because the data used to construct it was cherry picked to produe the desired result.

Following is a series of graphs showing how Michael Mann, his 'hockey-stick' graph and Warmists in general have been dead wrong:

World Map of temperatures and studies showing warming

Huang et al Boreholes graph of world temperatures

GRAPH: Briffa's reconstruction was affected by one freak tree.

Craig Loehle used 18 proxies to graph the last 2000 years.

Follow this link for a full breakdown and explanation of the above information.

Notice how indeed the climate 'warms' after the last trough on the last graph.  That identified cooling perod was the "Little Ice-Age".  Who would think that the climate would warm after an ice age.  Huh.

Michael Mann is as much (if not more) of a fraud and huckster as anyone at the UEA CRU.

Climategate: Recap & Other Developments

If you haven't been following all the Climategate developments closely, or are confused as to what the whole thing is about, here is a good article to read to bring you up to speed.  It's a good general recap of events as well as what the fallout of this event should be.

In other Climategate developments, is James Hansen the Climategate 'hacker' (leaker)?  If Al Gore is the Messiah of the global warming religion, Hansen is it's Pope.

Michael Mann, of debunked 'Hockey Stick' fame, says that he doesn't know of any researchers who have "grafted" actual climate data to proxy climate data to create any climate/temperature charts.  Yet this is the very "trick" talked about in the CRU e-mails and the very "trick" Mann indeed used to create his original 'hockey stick' graph.  As Christopher Horner over at Pajamas Media say, "So — Mike’s defense is that no one had told him what he, himself, was up to?"

Sittin' on the dock of the blog, wastin' time...

Haven't been putting up many posts the last couple of weeks.  Hey, it's December!  It's Christmas time!  Anyway, I'm getting ready for some global warming to fall here in San Antonio tomorrow, into a few books right now, trying to decide what to get the wife and kids for Christmas, trying to decide on Mac or PC or Mac and PC, gotta get the house ready for the in-laws coming into town for Christmas in a few weeks,  dogs and cats living together - MASS HYSTERIA!

I do read the blogs and news daily, so if anything catches my eye, I'll be sure to post on it.  Do stop by for any updates.

MERRY THREE-WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS!

Effective Surrender in Afghanistan

No mention of the word 'Victory'.  Not.  One.

No sense of purpose in the message on sending more troops to Afghanistan.

No sense or mention of the mission in Afghanistan.  Why are we sending the troops?  To win?  What?!

Not one mention of what a positive outcome in Afghanistan would be.

The only thing the president seems sure of, the only purpose in the whole speech apparently, is to leave Afghanistan within 18 months or so.

Also, no mention of the reason we are at war in Afghanistan in the first place - TO ERADICATE THE MONSTERS WHO ATTACKED THE UNITED STATES ON 9/11 AND MURDERED OUR COUNTRYMEN!  This ommission, for the benefit of talking about the economy and economic aspects of the war, disrespects in the most callous way the reason we are fighting to begin with.  The losses of American citizens on 9/11 as well as the losses of American and coalition service members since has been reduced simply to the bottom line on an accounting worksheet.  Pathetic.  (UPDATE:  It seems Obama did mention 9/11, so I stand corrected.  I still stand by the last sentence of the above paragraph however.)

This is the one area of the Presidency Obama cannot hide behind an advisor or czar or underling.  HE is the commander in chief.  HE alone bears responsibility for deploying troops.  He has been dithering on Afghanistan for months, ostensibly "reviewing" strategy.  What he's really been doing is trying to find a way to politically cover himself.

I have always maintained Obama would do this.  He can now claim he is 'acting' in Afghanistan - that he did something about the war.  What he's really doing is playing both sides of the fence.  While claiming he is acting in Afghanistan, he now can play the "I tried, but it didn't work, now we must leave" meme he's been looking for all along - and all of it conveniently before his re-election bid.

Even the Taliban aren't this stupid.

This 'man' is a POS of the highest order and this nation will suffer for it down the road.
