Did you ever watch Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K)? If you didn't, you missed out. (
Follow the link for explanation of the series if you are unaware of it's complete
awesomeness!)
As it happens, the MST3K writers and performers have not stopped their riffing on films. Now the enterprise is a web-based site called
Rifftrax. The Rifftrax crew riff on more popular and classic films which you can purchase from the site. (follow the site link for a sample)
They also do live broadcast events nationwide from time to time. There was just such a broadcast last Thursday, where the Rifftrax crew riffed on the "worst movie ever made" "
Plan 9 from Outer Space". Plan 9 is, probably, the worst movie
I have ever seen, having watched it some years ago as a kid. This time around, it was accompanied by riffing from the (former) MST3K group. I took my three kids to this event at the
Fiesta 16 theater here in San Antonio.
I can honestly say I haven't laughed for such a protracted period of time in years! The experience was awesome! I can also say I have found a new favorite theater in the Fiesta 16. My kids enjoyed the event as well. I tried to tell them about Plan 9, about how bad it was, but they didn't believe me, especially my son. Let's just say dad's credibility in 'reviewing' films received a shot in the arm after last Thursday.
If you enjoy this kind of stuff, if you enjoyed the original MST3K, if you want to spend two or more hours at these events laughing your head off, check out any future Rifftrax events which may occur in your area (be sure to follow the link above!)
More samples (and full movies, in parts) available at this
You Tube MST3K channel.
Note: These Rifftrax events are live broadcast. They are attended by audiences which are pretty much expected to participate during some points. These are not traditional "please be quiet" movies. Have fun with it and enjoy yourself!
