What's with "Oathkeepers"?

At the July 4th Tea Party here in San Antonio last weekend, a spokesman for the group "Oathkeepers" gave a speech.  The gist of the  speech is that the group wants active duty military, police as well as retired military and veterans to keep their oath to the Constitution.

For anyone who doesn't know:  Military folks take an "Oath of Enlistment" upon entering military service and at every point of re-enlistment thereafter.  I personally took the Oath for my last time back in January of 2007 when I re-enlisted for the last time.  The Oath is as follows:

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

Pretty straight forward.  There are some different iterations of the Oath for public officials and police departmetns depending on jurisdiction.  The Oath taken by the active-duty military forces however is uniform throughout the service.  First, before I continue, a word on my personal feelings on the Oath.

I took the Oath for the first time on May 16, 1987 when I first entered the delayed enlistment program.  That was over twenty-two years ago and I still remember the date.  Everytime I have taken the Oath, even as an 18 year old kid, I have understood the gravity of what I was saying.  Oaths anymore are more a mere formality (think politicians - how many pols ever really internalize their oaths?)  Maybe I'm just old fashioned (how can I be old-fashioned at 40?), but I am the kind of man who considers such an Oath a bond.    I know the importance and signifcance and this Oath in particular.  I have taken it to heart everyday of my military career.  With that said, I don't understand the premise the Oathkeepers are operating from.

From the Oathkeepers website:  Oath Keepers is an association of currently serving military, veterans, and peace officers who will fulfill the oath we swore to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, so help us God.

Our oath is to the Constitution, not to the politicians, and we will not obey unconstitutional (and thus illegal) and immoral orders, such as orders to disarm the American people or to place them under martial law and deprive them of their ancient right to jury trial.

Why do active duty military personnel and police officers see the need to apparently re-affrim their Oath?  Let me say I have no problem with this fundamentally.  As Mywife said when I mentioned this to her, married couples re-affirm their vows all the time.  But more on that in a minute.

If the person hasn't already internalized the Oath, then what good is re-affirming it?  If the Oath means to others as it does to me, then why the need to re-affirm it?  Of course I know not eveyone is like me, unfortunately for them!

There seems to be cherry-picking of what section of the Oath the Oathkeepers are publicizing.  The Oath we take is indeed to the Constitution, but we are also obligated to obey the orders of the President of the United States and the officer appointed over us and to follow the "regulations" (or "Instructions" if you're in the Air Force) and Unifrom Code of Millitary Justice.  The Oath is not simply, strictly to the Constitution as the Oathkeepers publicize.  If you browse the site, you will not see any mention of the complete ilitary oath anywhere (at least as of this writing.)

This bothers me.  It seems as if the Oath is being cherry-picked for partisan issues.  The assumption is that the military is ONLY obligated to the Constitution and this is simply not the case.  We are primarily obligated to the Consitution of course, but the presence of a semi-colon in the Oath has no less effect on our obligation to the President and our officers (or the "regulations" and UCMJ) as it does to relegating the right to keep and bare arms to the "militia" and not the people in the 2nd Amendment.

I know why this is there, because there is a fear the powers that be in Washington may at some point begin to really overstep their bounds.  If you go to the website, there is a video which I encourage you to go watch.  I did and it just struck me as a bit over the top.  It is rife with patriotic imagery and inspiring music.  The problem for me is the images of two of Fox new's resident overreactors, Shephard Smith and Geraldo Rivera responding to events at the height of Hurricane Katrina.  Events they are reporting about were later debunked.  Also shown is the old lady who got roughed up by an over-zealous cop for not wanting to give up her handgun.  The NRA sued (on behalf of Louisiana citizens) and won.  Another small segment shows a National Guardsman on patrol and the imagery cuts away after the Guardsman says he would shoot an American citizen.  If you watch the whole clip, it's obvious the Guardsman is saying what he would do based on what's going on in New Orleans at the time.  The implication is the Guardsman would just be patrolling the neighborhood waiting to murder innocent citizens - that's how I took it.  At best the video is disengenuous in it's representation of events.  I have been very critical of what happened during Katrina, but my criticism is mostly directed at the moronic and greedy citizenry than the mistakes made by the Federal government.  Particular scorn is reserved for the media which reported on events which simply did not happen, like the reports of hundreds of murders and rapes at the Superdome.  I say all of this not to take any reponsibility away from the inaction and screw-ups of the government.  The video at the site though portrays the events from one side, with much bias and out of context in my opinion.  Why?

Another impression one might get from the site is that military folks aren't already obligated NOT to obey unlawful or immoral orders.  This is a big sticking point with me.  I have never had a problem with standing up to leadership when they are wrong.  I can never recall refusing an order, since I've never been given an unlawful one.  At all levels of leadership, a military person is obligated to speak out when their leadership is pursuing the wrong course of action.  If a senior person to me orders me to write a ticket for a vehicle just because, with no justification, then Iam obligated to refuse, as I have done many times in the past.  If I am in a senior position and am pursuing a weird course of action, then my subordinates are obligated to stand up to me and tell me no.  Military personnel are protected by law in not obeying unlawful orders.  A person can even erfuse orders based on other principles (religious for example).  In these cases, they better be prepared to suffer consequences and justify those types of decisions to superior authority, but the opportunity to refuse orders is there.  The website and material makes it appear that these safeguards are not already in place and that the military and police are one bad leader away from installing full scale military rule.  I find this disturbing.

Perhaps there is a need to educate those entering the military more on history and the Consitution.  People do have legitimate concerns of an overreaching government.  I have concerns about the intent or core rationale behind implementing this project.  I e-mailed the founder of the site, Stewart Rhodes and left a contact message on the website on Monday, 6 July.  As of yet I haven't reeived any reply either on the website or to my e-mail.  I fully identified myself by name, rank and service branch.  I would like to have my concerns answered.  Frankly, I'm a bit shocked the site has received so much support from officers who are on active duty without these concerns being addressed anywhere on the site.  It also bothers me this group has infiltrated the tea parties seemingly without these issues being addressed.  Perhaps I am picking fly poop out of pepper?

The hackles on my neck rise when any group uses the credibility of the Armed Forces to do this kind of stuff.  It just gives me a feeling as when the lefties were all ga-ga with conspiracy theories about Bush and the NWO and all that drivel and implementing martial law and not holding elections and "seizing control", blah, blah, blah.

I don't feel the need to re-affrim an Oath which I've already spent twenty-two years upholding.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree

Obama's eleven year old daughter is right on track to being just as  much a Lefty as dad and mom it seems.

There is another image of the child standing with her mom wearing another of those gosh-awful peacnik tee-shirts.  Nothing like letting your child wear a tee-shirt desigend by radical leftists.  Of course the Obama's are radical leftists, so this really isn't any surprise.  How long before the kids start sporting the ever-p[oular amongst radicals Che tees?

Children of the 60's cultivating tomorrows radicals.

Touching.

Sarah Palin murdered Michael Jackson

So says a caller on, wait for it...Al Sharpton's radio show:

I literally have nothing to say.

Actually, I do.  The caller didn't actually accuse Sarah Palin of murder specifically, but that is the only implication to take from this.  Even as twisted as Sharpton is, for him to not chastises the caller in even the mildest way just enforces the fact Sharpton is an a--hat

UPDATE:

Other "deaths" Sarah Palin has some 'splainin for:

David Carradine
Ed McMahon
Steve McNair
Farrah Fawcett
Karl Malden
Billy Mays

All of these deaths occuring prior to her resignation as Governor.  Hmmm.

Sarah Palin is also sought in questioning on the disappearances of Amelia Earhart and Barack Obama's campaign promises.

I'm just putting this out there.  Perhaps Andrew Sullivan can suspend his investigation into who Trig's real mom is and take this on?  Just a thought.

Pushing back an Obama benchmark?

The media is pushing back the benchmark on Obama's promise to create"600,000 in the next 100 days".  Specifically the time frame for that specified 100 days.  At least it seems they are trying to push back the benchmark.

Obama made the initial pledge to those 600,000 jobs on June 8th.  That was one month ago - 30 days.  The Google search for "600,000 jobs in 100 days" nets the same date results, all around June 8th and 9th (at least on the first search page).

Using the administrations own math, this would give them 70 days to create those 600,000 jobs originally promised.  I already posted about this here.

I post about this again since I'm seeing an article today using the 100 days benchmark, yet not stating this benchmark originated a month ago.  In this same article, the WaPo is still parroting the adminstration line that the current stimulus is STILL going to "create or save" 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year.  Just doing the simple math on that would mean the adminstration would have to be "creating" about 200K jobs every month on average.  This also isn't taking into account the over 1,000,000 jobs lost over the last five months.  But let's not not a little thing like math gunk up the works, the administration doesn't...

The Obama administration has a penchant for having expiration dates for all of the policies and campaign promises.  In this particular case, the MSM seems to be pushing back the implementation date.

Cap& Trade will control your home

Section 304 effectively turns over control of your home to the State.  Under provisions in this section, the government will be able to inspect your property, at their leisure and fine you for your lack of environemtnal compliance.

Let me introduce you to a little section of the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill called the "Building Energy Performance Labeling Program". It's section 304 of the bill and it says, basically, that your house belongs to the state. See, the Federal Government really wants a country full of energy-efficient homes, so much so that the bill mandates that new homes be 30 percent more energy efficient than the current building code on the very day the law is signed. That efficiency goes up to 50 percent by 2014 and only goes higher from there, all the way to 2030. That, by the way, is not merely a target but a requirement of the law. New homes must reach those efficiency targets no matter what.

What if you want to do your part for The State Gaia and you comply with the Feds more than likely, ever widening list of home efficiency initiatives?

I'll give you a hint: think appliances. Trust me, Section 304 is but a miniscule fraction of the mandates the Democrats want to foist upon you.

Under Cap & Trade, your home and other property you think you own will be under the effective control of the government.  To the government controlling of your home, don't forget to add your preferred automobile of choice.  Isn't living under our new Marxist Obamalords wonderful?

An unprecedented threat?

"Climate change" poses an "unprecedented threat" to American's way of life?  Really?

Just how exactly?

I take umbrage to the use of the word "unprecedented."  America has NEVER BEFORE faced a threat as dire as "climate change"?  The Soviet Union, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan are apparently mere child's play in the cannon of threats faced by America.    Unprecedented, by definition, means having no precedent, so perhaps the government official referred to in this story means that "climate" has never before posed a dire threat to America?  How about the then "unprecedented threat" of climate change ("global cooling") which was bandied about in the 1970's?  Words mean things and to say that climate poses an "unprecedented" risk to America is a lie.  Then as now the whole notion of the climate threatening anything is untrue.

I hear and read this stuff the pols use to scare the hell out of the citizenry and wonder, "why in the hell isn't a reporter asking the most simple and obvious follow up question there is.  'How'?"  How is "climate change" posing such an unprecedented threat?  If I could get one of these administration officials to give an answer NOT straight from "An Inconvenient Truth": then perhaps I'd listen a little more attentively.

And the author of the above linked article does a disservice, either by omission or simply writing or posting someone else's script by referring to some type of "climate-altering pollution".  What type of pollution would the article be referring to?  Certainly not CO2?  CO2 is NOT pollution for goodness sake!  It is a naturally occuring element found all over our planet!  Every form of plant life on this planet needs CO2 to survive.  Carbon is also NOT a pollutant!  It is the most plentiful element on the planet.  If it were not for carbon, THERE WOULD BE NO LIFE ON THIS PLANET!  Can we stop letting the talking points of the morons saying carbon is pollution influence articles in conservative resources please?

And stop saying "green technologies" will expand our economies and create jobs, wealth, blah, blah, blah.  I suppose subsidizing Russian energy companies is a way to not outsource our money and jobs, making us less dependent or foreign source for our energy?  Democrats admit that cap-&-trade will kill jobs.  Why else build in a safety net to the C&T legislation?  Stop saying it will do otherwise.

I am sick and tired of hearing myself and others referred to as "climate change deniers".  I do not deny nor have I ever denied the climate was changing.  What I and others vehemently DO deny is the effects of said change.  I simply deny that I have to forfeit the decisions of my life to carbon cops who will tell me how many miles I can drive, what kind of food I can eat, as well as what kind of lightbulb I can put in my lamps!

As to reassurances from these government suits that cost will be minmal, does ANYONE believe that?  EVERYTHING the government says will ONLY cost x NEVER gets it right!  How in the hell does the government expect me to believe that enacting one of the costliest tax increases in the history of this country will only cost me $.50 cents in 2020?  Even for the sake of argument, if I were to buy the "it''l only cost $.50" for my home electric bill, what about the extra coming out of my pocket to defray the increase in gasoline costs?  Food costs?  Other tranportation costs?  What if my local utility, to comply with the federal mandates decides to increase their rates?  Then what?  There is a great movie line spoken by actor John Vernon in the classic movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales":  "Don't pi$$ down my back and tell me it's raining."  Which incidentally, he spoke to a Washington Senator who was trying to sell him a bill of goods.

"Climate change" as preached by ANYONE on the Left, especially Democrat politicians, is not an "unprecedented threat".

Don't pi$$ down America's back and tell us it's raining.

San Antonio 4th of July Tea Party

Consider this a teaser post.

I'll be putting up a detailed account with photos of the San Antonio, Texas 4th of July Tea Party I attended with the Vice-Commander and my youngest daughter this past weekend.

It was hot - steaming, melt your face like Raiders-of-the-Lost-Ark HOT!  A venue which included running water, fairly inexpensive food and beverages, and indoor plumbing was a bonus.  Facilities were available to get out of the heat which, though lacking air conditioning, provided big fans to keep the air moving which actually made it comfortable to eat and drink.  Even though adult beverages were sold throughout the day, I didn't witnessed nor hear of any issue dealing with stupid folks.  The Rio Cibolo Ranch (at least the area in which the tea party encompassed) was a good choice.  It was about an hour drive from my house (30 minutes or so from downtown San Antonio), yet easy to find.  The area was nice - fairly decent grass (which had obviously been treated against insects) which made the area in front of the stage nice and "picnicky".  The entertainment was pretty good.  A good lineup of speakers as well.

The one thing I enjoyed about the message of this tea party as opposed to the April 15th event at the Alamo?  There was a call to action.  Actual advice was given to get involved in "changing" events going on in politics today.  I'll give more details in another post, but this event wasn't just a "venting" or "B" session.  April 15th was all about solidarity and frustration, rightfully so.  This event was geared towards action and what people could do.

Perhaps only a few thousand folks at this event.  I haven't heard or seen any news footage or visited the event website since Saturday, so I have no particulars, but my guess to my wife at the event was perhaps three to five thousand.  There may have been more at the height of the event after it cooled off later in the evening.

All in all, it was a nice time (did I mention how HOT it was?!).  There will be more to follow with photos and a more detailed analysis.

The San Antonio Tea Party organizers did a wonderful job!  They pulled together a lot of stuff, including a fireworks show to cap stuff off in just the little over two months since the Alamo event.  Well done and kudos all around!

The Economy, Plastic Turkeys & Charts Galore!

Here's a handy chart to go along with a post I did this morning on the increase in unemployment rate.  Note how the employment rate kareens many times higher than the administrations owns projections for employment had there been no Stimulus plan to begin with!

Obama showing the world his powers of coincidentalism (made that word up):  Out of an audience of 200, the president just happens to choose three who are part of organizations working to pass his health care legislation.   Hey, remember when a plastic turkey held by a president was worth its own investigative news stories? Those were the days.

And what better way during an economic crises to show the electorate how to be frugal with money, but to take extravagant, mostly unnecessary taxpayer-funded junkets overseas!

Two months to create those 600K jobs...

Unemployment up to 9.5%.

467,000 jobs lost in June.  Not much spin so far that at least the rate of job loss slowed, thereby somehow "saving" jobs as the unemployment rate for June increased over May by around 100,000.

I'm no economist, but just anecdotally it seems the summer employment rate would increase due to summer hires (kids getting out of school).  It will be interesting to see what the unemployment numbers for September will be after kids go back to school.  Will the unemployment rate jump heading into the Fall?

The rate continues to creep up though.  What will the Obama administration say and do when those 600,000 jobs Obama promised over the summer fail to appear?  If the unemployment rate fails to reach double digits by say October, will the administration somehow take credit for the rate not reaching 10% "this year"?  What is the metric used for evaluating any jobs "created or saved"?  Will it take into account those jobs already lost?  If Obama had planeed to create 600,000 jobs this summer, since June saw more than 467,000, does that mean that Obama now has to "create or save" over a million jobs?  Or will he be happy to somehow perhaps break even and end up with 0% job growth and that will be hailed as some sort of progress?

Time will tell.  It will be interesting to see what new spin this information wil take over the next few days.

Lt. Choi just doesn't get it

It's not about being gay.  It's not about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".

It's about violating the law.

Any officer who doesn't understand this is unfit for command and service.

His Iraqi service, though commendable, is irrelevant.  The money spent training him and other strawman defences are irrelevant.  Lt. Choi violated military policy.  He violated the law.  He must suffer the consequences.

This is an issue precisely because Lt. Choi is choosing to make it so.  He entered military service knowing what the policy is.  As an officer, he is responsible for enforcing the policy on others and ensuring his subordinates are aware of the policy and the consequences of violating it.  Knowing what the policy is, he came in anyway.  Perhaps he felt he could live with it.  Maybe he had ulterior motives right from the start.  Who knows.

All I know is that a military officer who violates the law is to be punished.  Social acceptability and political correctness are not defences to violating the law.  In this particular case it seems Lt. Choi is banking on social pressure and more favorable political winds to keep the focus away from his misconduct.

Lt. Choi is perfectly free to live his life however he wishes, this isn't the issue.  Naturally anyone in the military knows there are times and circumstances where societal norms or even non-norms don't apply - the military world is not the civilian world.  The reason the military has a seperate legal system and code of behavior is precisely because of the differences inherent between the two worlds.  If Lt. Choi were a civilian, this wouldn't be an issue.  He is not.  He is a military officer and is goverend by military law and military rules.  Being a National Guardsman, perhaps he doesn't fully understand this, not being immersed in military life 24/7.  But while on active duty (while serving) he falls under the militaries rules.  If you find you can't abide by what the military is doing, if you can't live under the rules the way they are, then get out, you have that right.

Lt. Choi knew what the rules were, he knew the law.  As an officer, he allowed his personal feelings to overide his duty.  This alone makes him an ineffective officer and unfit for continued service.

Get over yourself Lt. Choi.  As is typical with many these days, it's all about "me".  Any officer worth his salt would bow out, accept the consequences and salvage what personal Honor he could.  Of course one must have a sense of Honor to begin with to wish to salvage any, but that's just my opinion.
