If Knowing is half the battle...

Then what's the other half?  Follow this link for the answer.

Or your could express the conundrum in this handy equation:

Just to point out, "knowing is half the battle" is specious logic.

We can express the statement thusly:

K=(1/2)B (where K=Knowledge and B=Battle)

For this statement to be true then

2K=B

should obtain. But ask yourself, if you know twice as much have you already won the battle? No, the battle must still be fought. Even if twice the knowledge helps you avoid the battle, the battle was not fought and therefore we would have express thusly:

2K=0B

which leads to

K=(1/2)0B

at wich point I'm confused about what my original point was...

Dallas Cowboys Training Camp - Day 2

Attended the morning session of the Cowboys Training Camp today.  Arrived at the Alamodome about 0740.  Took my place in the "True Blue" Fan Club 'early opening' line.  They opened the doors right about 0750.

Took a place in the endzone seating, initially second row from the front..  Figured his would be a good place to be in a position to get autographs when the practice was over.  A couple in the front row, right in front of me, were picked to receive VIP passes to get field access, so their front row seats came open.  Me and another guy jumped on them post haste.  Now settled in the first row, things were looking pretty good.

The players filed out slowly.  They were suited out in full pads today.  Got some good shots of Nick Folk (#6, Kicker) warming up and doing some practice kicks.  The practice started out light, mostly with special teams running through some drills.  Also saw the punter Mat McBriar put up some punts.  The punts looked good, nice hang time, good distance.  Hopefully he's fully recovered from injuring his foot last season.

The only negative was when the team started running through their 'mini-scrimmage'.  The players who weren't playing were blocking the view of the action, so those of us seated in the end zone couldn't really see much.  Sitting on the fifty yard line would have been ideal to really see the run throughs.

Until the scrimmage there was really no contact, meaning the players weren't hitting each other much.  During the scrimmage though, there were a few good licks but nothing major.  Of course this is traning camp, so there won't be much if any really good hitting.  Too much money being spent dontcha know for players to start kicking the crap our of each other in training camp.

The offense did a majority of their drills on my end of the field which was nice.  Good looks at the 'Boys from where I was seated.

Marion Barber looks lean. He looks like he may have picked up a few steps on the speed, which is good.  It looks like his breakaway speed is better than I've ever seen it which is another good thing.  Didn't see any deep balls from Romo or any of the other quarterbacks today, though there were a few deep balls tossed yesterday.   The rookie QB's Carpenter and McGee look like they've got pretty good arms, but I don't know much about them beyond that at this time.  No deep drills from the offense today.

The defense was practicing at the other end of the field, so I didn't see any of what they did today.

Not to many players took the time for autographs at the end of the practice today, though I did get Miles Austin's autograph, which is nice!

Not going to the afternoon practice today.  I'll be heading out for the practice tomorrow afternooon and all of us (the family) will head down, probably for both practices and to spend some time downtown on Saturday.

Dallas Cowboys Training Camp

The Dallas Cowboys had their first day of practice at training camp today.

I live here in San Antonio, I am also a Cowboys fan.  Yes, I know, some of you less sophisticated followers of less worthy sports franchises may be wondering, "So what?"  Indeed.  Though everyone can and should be a fan, nay, a follower of the Dallas Cowboys, not all of you have there werewithal to attend their training camp.  At this point you may retort that my attendance at said camp would be a fortuitous circumstance based simply on geographic proximity.

And you would be right.

Though I am a Cowboy fan, as you should be, I am not made of money.  Considering how much money we'll all soon be shoveling into the coffers for our "free" health care, I better take advantage of cicumstances now.   (Yes, a partisan political reference on a sports post.  What's more partisan than sports after all?)  Anyhoo, the Cowboys are here in town for training camp.  The Vice-Commander and I ( and our youngest) went to the kickoff 'party' last night and we attended the first practice today.

First a word about how things in 'training camps' have changed.  When I was a kid the (then) Houston Oilers had their training camp back home in San Angelo, Texas.  They used the Angelo State University practice fields and facilities.  I remember watching the practices with friends of mine in the heat, sitting in the stands.  If there was media attendance, I didn't notice it (honestly, what 11 or 12 year old cares about sports writers?).  One year in particular, my best friend Von and I hung around the clubhouse until well after the practice sessions and media had departed.  Only we and a handful of fans had hung around.  Why?  Because Earl Campbell had yet to come out.  (Earl Campbell being, IMO, one of the best running backs in the history of football).  I don't know what the deal was with that particular day, but he didn't come out until well after the press and crowds had left.  It was really cool, there only being my friend and I and a handful of others there.  Mr. Campbell came out with another player, I don't recall who.  I asked for his autograph, as did the rest.  Since there was no crowd and no press, Mr. Campbell was very accomodating, signing autographs and answering questions, shaking hands.  A very affable, amicable man.  I still have that autograph.

Here we are almost thirty years later and how times have changed.

I was amused by the thought of a 'kickoff party' for a training camp, but I understand the intent.  To make money of course, but also to 'kick off' the season as it were.  Let's be honest.  American football is the only decent sport out there.  I mean that only semi-facetiously.  Baseball may be "America's Pasttime" but unless you're a hardcore, diehard follower, have you ever tried watching it on TV?  Boooring!  Baseball is a great sport to watch in person, but on TV it's a snoozer.  Basketball?  Please.  I do admit b-bal takes a lot of stamina, but all it really takes is height.  The only sport that come close to football is hockey.  Hockey games in person are almost as good as football games in person.    Not everywhere has hockey though, so you might as well watch football.  There are no other sports.  Don't talk to me about golf or tennis.  Golf isn't a sport since it requires a dress code and tennis is for girls.  Everyone knows girls are no good at sports, so tennis doesn't qualify.  But I digress.

The 'kickoff party' was good insofar as my wife surpirsed me with a Silver membership in the Dallas Cowboys Fan Club.  I finally have the proverbial card to carry.  Jerry Jones came out, the cheerleaders performed and the key players were introduced.  Not bad, though I do have a gripe.  I know I live in San Antonio and the powers that be were probably going for a whole ambiance thing, but there was entirely to much tejano music.  I know this is picking fly poop out of pepper, but I'm sorry, there was.  The event was OK, though it was a bit cheesy.

I decided to go to the first days practive today.  I was going to go early, since "True Blue" fans can get in an hour early before the 'general public' (peons), but the Vice-Commander got off work early so we went together.  We didn't get there until right before practice started.   The practice session ran about two hours.  It was pretty light - shorts, helmets and shoulder pads.  It was pretty good though.  Interesting to watch

I've taken lots of pictures and will update when I can get them downloaded.  Since I'm on terminal leave, not working and have nothing else to do right now, I'm toying with trying to go as much as possible.  Training camp runs through August 19th, so there will be plenty of opportunity to go.  The only thing keeping me from going everyday is having to pay for parking.  The Alamodome is downtowan and there is no free parking anywhere down there as far as I know.  It would cost me over $200 just for parking if I went every day.  They should be selling some kind of 'parking pass', live and learn.  Of course with all the tax cuts the Democrats have given me, it shouldn't be a problem (yeah, I went there).  I'll be going as often as possible though, taking pictures and whatnot, so stop back often for updates.

Obama's GITMO plan is FUBAR

Acronyms are cool.

Posted from AoS:

On his second day in office, the President promised that the detention facility would be closed by January 22, 2010. He was reluctant, however, to close it on his own authority. He wants Congressional cover and Congress hasn't been too helpful with that. Even Democrats, particularly in the House, oppose shutting down our primary overseas detention center and moving the detainees to the U.S.

To be sure, Guantanamo Bay is a military facility. The President can close it and move the detainees as part of his commander-in-chief powers (though things might get sticky if Congress passes a law saying otherwise). President Obama won't do that. He's too afraid. He will--like always--announce a policy and then vote "present", hoping all the while that someone else will do it for him.

Health/Wellness programs DON'T SAVE MONEY!

The Dems can't get support for their supposed health care "savings" since there aren't any.  In fact, it will cost MORE money (so says the CBO).  No one from the Left has still answered the question about how spending $1 trillion is supposed to save money, but I'm no economist so maybe I'm just not "getting it."

Anyway, now the Dems are trying to tell you that "health and wellness programs" will have "benefits and save money".

Bullshinola.

When I entered the military back in 1987 there was no such thing as health and wellness.  Over the past decade though the DoD has spent millions of dollars on such programs, in fact setting up so-called "Health and Wellness Centers" at military bases worldwide.  These HAWCS are staffed with nutritionists, therapists, consultants, etc.  These centers have no real "doctors" (not medical doctors anyway).  Their mission is to give classes, provide counseling, and information for nutrition, exercise, etc.  They also give body mass index readings and other types of stuff.  Sometimes they have special exercise classes (like "spin classes"), yoga classes, etc, things you would expect to get from a fitness club staff.  They also give classes on smoking cessation, drug and alcohol awareness, etc.  Basically, it's an offshoot of "the gym".  Remember, no real doctors work at these centers.  Remember the DoD spends millions of dollars on these centers every year.

Their mission is to "advise" and "instruct".  They give classes on how to eat right, but can't make you.  They give smoking cessation classes, even providing stop-smoking patches, etc.  How's that working?  The military, as a cross section of society, has more smokers on average than the general populace; I think the statistic is over 30% of active duty military folks smoke.  When a military person gets a "referral" to the HAWC it's treated as a joke - it is a joke.  HAWCs by and large are wasteful, redundant mechanisms.  So what's the point?

Because someone fell for the almost pseudo-science of "health and wellness" and "prevention".  On the surface this makes sense.  If you eat right there is less of a chance of getting fat and having to deal with the associated health problems which could arise.  If you don't look past the generalities, it makes sense.  The problem is I should be hearing this from my doctor, not a "fitness consultant".  In fact I do hear this from my doctor, every time I go for a checkup or physical.  So why do we have those "fitness consultants" again?  Why is the government spending twice the money for half the desired result?  That's the big elephant in the room, isn't it?

Personally, if a "fitness consultant" tells me to eat right it goes in one ear and out the other.  If my doctor tells me to eat right, ties that to some problem I have at the moment, or ties it to how I might develop a problem later (since my doctor knows my medical history) I will be more inclined to take his advice, not the "consultant's".

Let's be frank.  In this day and age if you don't know that you can't eat all manner of fatty, processed foods, drink every soda on the shelf, stuff your face with twinkies, then not get out of the chair, put the TV remote down and get some exercise, that this type of behavior is bad for you, then you deserve to be hit in the head with a tack hammer.  Or suffer that massive coronary.  Whatever.

If your family has a history of heart disease, then there is a better chance you might develop it and need to eat right, exercise a bit more and see your doctor, not a "consultant".  If you get sick and it doesn't get better after a week or so with over-the-counter meds, then you need to see a doctor, not a "consultant".  There's your "health and wellness" advice, free of charge.

Also:  "Prevention" is the term for using a bit of common sense before you do stuff so you don't hurt yourself.  In other words, if you are walking through your neighborhood and see a swimming pool full of pirahna, don't jump in.  There, you prevented your death.

We don't need a government bureaucracy separate from your doctor to tell you to eat right.  If you want that, pay for a fitness club membership on your own.  But that is what "health and wellness" is - it's code for spending more money, separate from your doctor, to tell you stuff you already know.  One more thing, if you don't think the government won't begin to mandate such "healthy behaviors", if you don't think that under a government health care plan not "living healthy" won't be used as justification to deny you care, your kidding yourself.

"Health and wellness" is the key to unlock that particular Pandora's Box.

To 'jolt' or not to 'jolt', which is the spin?

Vice-President Joe Biden today"...the act was intended to provide steady support for our economy over an extended period — not a jolt that would last only a few months."

Vice -President Joe Biden back in March”...the Recovery Act, as we call it, provides a necessary jolt to our economy to implement what we refer as ’shovel-ready’ projects.”

President-elect Barack Obama back in November 2008:  "...we need a big stimulus package that will jolt the economy back into shape and that is focused on the 2.5 million jobs that I intend to create during the first part of my administration."

So (takes a deep breath):  the 'stimulus', which was never supposed to be a 'stimulus' but a 'recovery', though called a 'stimulus' by the president hmself, was specifically designed to create 2.5 million jobs, but caused the loss of 2.6 million jobs, was supposed to 'jolt' the economy back into shape, though it was never supposed to 'jolt' anything.  Or something like that...

I'm dizzy...

Anthropogenic? Ummm...not so much

How many "Waterloos" can one guy have in a week?

Nature not man responsible for recent global warming

Three Australian researchers have shown that natural forces are the dominant influence on climate, in a study just published in the highly-regarded Journal of Geophysical Research. According to this study little or none of the late 20th century global warming and cooling can be attributed to human activity.

"The surge in global temperatures since 1977 can be attributed to a 1976 climate shift in the Pacific Ocean that made warming El Niño conditions more likely than they were over the previous 30 years and cooling La Niña conditions less likely" says corresponding author de Freitas.

"We have shown that internal global climate-system variability accounts for at least 80% of the observed global climate variation over the past half-century. It may even be more if the period of influence of major volcanoes can be more clearly identified and the corresponding data excluded from the analysis.”

According to the three researchers, ENSO-related warming during El Niño conditions is caused by a stronger Hadley Cell circulation moving warm tropical air into the mid-latitudes. During La Niña conditions the Pacific Ocean is cooler and the Walker circulation, west to east in the upper atmosphere along the equator, dominates.

"When climate models failed to retrospectively produce the temperatures since 1950 the modellers added some estimated influences of carbon dioxide to make up the shortfall," says McLean.

"The close relationship between ENSO and global temperature, as described in the paper, leaves little room for any warming driven by human carbon dioxide emissions. The available data indicate that future global temperatures will continue to change primarily in response to ENSO cycling, volcanic activity and solar changes.”

So.  Nature (primarily) NOT man-made (anthropogenic) forces are responsible for AT LEAST 80% of any measured global temperature increases.  Not coal-fired power plants.  Not EXXON-Mobil.  Not your F-150 or your bat-b-que grill.  And it's peer reviewed, the bugaboo the lefties use against their detractors on this issue.  "Well, your science isn't peer-reviewed! "  They can't just pass this off.  Additionally, the UN IPCC is specifically sited, revealing they knew this mechanism was working and their climate models can't effectively account for it more than 12 months out.

All those extrapolations out to 2030, 2050 or even 2100 are...wait for it...GUESSES

Nature.  Who woulda thunk it?

More ammunition in the continuing "car & trade" fight.

"Let me be perfectly clear..."

Totally cool now if we don't get "health care" by August:

So...why did he have the presser last night again?  And still blaming Republicans.

Another thing that strikes me about this:  If nothing gets done in Washington without a deadline, and apparently now nothing gets done with a deadline, then what's all the fuss about?

Note his admonition to the Senate to “just keep working” while they’re getting ready to, um, take a month off. Exit question: If health-care reform is such an urgent national priority, why aren’t the Democrats suspending their vacations to pass it?

If a doctor is after your kids tonsils...

Blinded by profit, doctors often try to remove tonsils from children. If your doctor wants to remove your child’s tonsils, take some step to make sure it’s necessary.

* Ask the doctor if he’s considered whether the problem could be just allergies or something.

* Ask how much profit will he make from this “necessary” procedure.

* Take your child’s medical files and send it to Barack Obama. He or another qualified bureaucrat will determine whether the operation is necessary.

* Wait eight to ten months for a response.

Remember: Only you can prevent doctors from making a profit off your kids’ tonsils.
