As Rusty says, "
Moderation is not a core value."
This is a lesson folks like the McCains (yes, John and now Meghan) need to learn. It is also a lesson other supposed GOP "moderates"
such as Olympia Snowe haven't learned and who keep pushing. Snowe is upset that the GOP hasn't learned the lesson of "inclusiveness"?
As Rush Limbaugh says (paraphrasing), "
You can't out-liberal a Democrat."
The McCains (especially Meghan) of late are pushing the same canard - the GOP needs to be more inclusive, more open, more essentially Democrat than the Democrats themselves. What no one who gives these morons the time of day ever asks them is, "How well did your moderation and 'inclusiveness' work during the 2008 elections?" McCain has made a career out of being a "maverick", of being more 'moderate' of being more 'independent', yet he has two failed presidential runs under his belt. So where exactly is the evidence that all of this "moderation" and "inclusiveness" will give us anything postive in return?
There isn't any.
Conservatives are a principled lot. They have and live by a value system. Conservatives don't believe in moderating much, since to do so undermines their whole foundational base. This is not to say conservatives won't
compromise in good faith when needed. Most folks don't understand there is a
difference between compromise and moderation. Moderation is basically taking the other guys viewpoint. Compromise is working out differences arriving at a solution which works for both parties. Take illegal "immigration". To a moderate calling illegals 'illegal' isn't helpful, it's to insensitive or something. To a conservative, calling an illegal an illegal isn't something to parse for the sake of political correctness. It is a proper label given the subjects violation of specific law. If an illegal comes here as such, by definition they are a criminal. How can one 'moderate' that stance without abandoning core principle? You by definition cannot moderate the law, especially if it's codified. The law is to be enforced, period.
Life is life. Property is to be personal. Income belongs to the earner, not the government. These are core values. They cannot be "moderated". How can one be moderate on life? A baby is a baby. To moderate that is to twist oneself into sophistic justifications which ultimately give us the problems and devisiveness about abortion we have today.
Yeah, we have to deal with the Democrat, filibuster proof majority, but they had the GOP over a barrel anyway. Specter and the others gave the Dems the majority they needed on Porkulus and the Dems were going to nuke the filibuster anyway on hot-button items with the "reconciliation" procedure, so what have we really lost?
A spineless, cowardly hack more interested in self-preservation than principle to begin with.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
