The Day the Earth Stood for Carbon Credits

"Klaatu barada nikto" now means "Buy carbon credits or we will destroy you!"

Klaatu To Warn Us About Global Warming

Hollywood is, once again, going to preach to all of us about how the dreaded "climate change" is going to kill us all.  And in keeping with the original movie, will the message also be that we better do something about it...or our alien overlords will?

I don't know how familiar you are with the original (and classic) version of The Day the Earth Stood Still, but it was borne out of fears of the Atomic Age and the initial stirrings of the Cold War. Today it may seem quaint and dated but at the time it was a very relevant theme to be tackled from a sci-fi angle.

Over at MTV.com they've quoted Keanu Reeves in an interview and while he admits that yes, there is a huge threat posed by the staggering number of international conflicts...
"The version [of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'] I was just working on, instead of being man against man, it’s more about man against nature. My Klaatu says that if the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives. I’m a friend to the earth."
So, the good Keanu is going to play our alien savior in a remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

Huh.

Already you can see the message of this film - act to correct climate change, or we, your alien overseers will make sure you aren't around to despoil the planet.  And ostensibly they can then ...what?  Move in and take our natural resources?  Enslave the polar bears themselves?

And this is a great line:  "Anyway, with all the conflict and outright genocide going on in the world today, an alien is going to come from outer space and try to get us to buy carbon credits?"

Will the film address this I wonder:  If you aliens are so swell and environmentally friendly, and obviously technologically advanced, and if you care so much for our stewardship of the planet (and by extension the humans upon said planet), will you give us access to your technological superiority so that, we too, can jetset around the universe and butt into other planets' business?

I wonder.
