I remember watching the farce over the death of 'Princess' Diana in 1997. I also juxtaposed the media coverage of her death as opposed to Mother Teresa.
Both died only about a month apart and the contrast in the remembrance of both was/is startling.
We are still inundated with
glamorous and glorious renditions of the 'life' and 'accomplishments' of Diana. What did she do? OK, she didn't like land mines. And she was a humanitarian after a fashion. But most people do good things in their life and never receive the adulation Diana did and continues to get.
Mother Teresa was a person of sacrifice and selflessness of the first order. She spent her ENTIRE life honoring God and helping people all over the world. She didn't jump into the spotlight after a media blitzful marriage and didn't live her life for the sake of herself.
I was truly saddened by the loss of Mother Teresa when she died. I had never met her and knew her only through her deeds. When Diana died I remember not feeling much shock and n sadness. I was appalled that Diana was honored as such a paragon of virtue. I don't mean to come down on Diana, but does she really deserve the praise of the world?
Diana, though she did good works, lived her life in a fashion unbecoming one given the adulation she receives. Mother Teresa lived a life deserving remembrance and celebration, yet receives neither from the world.
How sad is that?
